Sue Morrow Flanagan’s remarkable career ranged from green construction to publishing to journalism. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Sue worked as a foreign correspondent for The Financial Times in Kathmandu, Nepal, specializing in coverage of political events, Third World development, historic preservation, mountaineering, endangered species and human rights. Her work has been published in The Guardian, The Economist, The Washington Post, Readers Digest, The Observer and many other international and US publications. As a broadcast journalist, she also worked for the BBC World Service, BBC Television, the Canadian Broadcasting System and World Wide Pictures. She contributed to the Financial Times, particularly in the field of Himalayan art. Her recent published work also appeared in Power Cruising, and Art Asia Pacific Magazine.
After 12 years abroad, Sue returned to the United States in 1982. While raising her children, Sue worked in marketing and public relations for Clearwater’s Great Hudson River Revival, Historic Hudson Valley and the National Maritime Historical Society. She worked as the president of two not-for-profits: The Weston Charitable Foundation as well as The Kitchawan Institute. Sue was the driving force behind The Kitchawan Institute (TKI) between 1998 and 2006. TKI worked with the New York State Energy Research Development Authority and Steven Winter Associates to renovate a 13,000 sq. ft building into the smallest green building in New York. Kitchawan continues as a sustainability think tank with a large board of architects and engineers who meet regularly to discuss green buildings and sustainability.
In 1989, she launched Morgan Brown, Ltd which duly published Water Ways: New York’s Waterfront News, which was a 20,000 – 50,000 circ. newspaper dedicated to balanced coverage of development and environmental issues throughout New York State. Morgan Brown has handled a wide range of publishing and information services projects over the years.
She served on the board of the following organizations: The India Development Board, founded by E. F. Schumacher, specializing in appropriate technology transfers; The State Council On Waterways, an environmental and maritime education group; and Hudsonia, a environmental science organization based in Bard College, Annandale on Hudson. From 1993-1995, she served on the Marina Advisory Board for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. After 16 years, she retired from the board of the State Council on Waterways (SCOW). She was a member of the board of advisors for Action for Tomorrow’s Environment.
Sue was diagnosed with cancer in 2002, but worked on, battling the disease but with her creativity and enthusiasm undiminished.
Sue died in July 2010, but continues to inspire all who knew her.
